Musk vs. OpenAI: The Tech Battle Brewing Behind the Screens
— The Tesla boss takes a swing at ChatGPT, bans iPhones (kinda), and quietly launches his own AI army
“Whose AI is it anyway?”
Let’s be honest: half the folks in the office don’t even know what AI really is, but Elon Musk? He’s out here treating it like a full-contact sport.
Last week, he basically said: “If Apple dares to embed OpenAI into their iPhones… I’m banning iPhones at Tesla, SpaceX, everywhere.”
No joke—he even threatened to lock them away in Faraday cages. (Imagine checking your phone during lunch and needing a security badge, a wrench, and a physics degree.)
And all this? It’s because Musk doesn’t trust OpenAI anymore. And he helped start the dang thing.
Personal? Oh yeah.
Back in 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI, hoping it’d be a non-profit, humanity-first kinda thing. Fast-forward to 2024, and now he’s suing them. He claims they’ve gone full corporate, with Microsoft pulling the strings behind the scenes.
To quote my friend Josh (who once rage-quit a fantasy football league he created),
“Bro started the party, didn’t like the playlist, now he’s flipping tables.”

Meanwhile… over at Tesla HQ
While throwing shade at Apple and OpenAI, Musk low-key launched something huge. On Twitter, he shared:
“Super congratulations to the
@Tesla_AI software & chip design teams
on a successful @Robotaxi launch!!
Culmination of a decade of hard work.
Both the AI chip and software teams were built from scratch within Tesla.”
Yep. Tesla just launched its Robotaxi project in Austin, Texas—with their own in-house AI system that doesn’t need ChatGPT or outside help. Basically, Musk said,
“Why borrow someone else’s AI… when we can build our own?”
And build it, they did. Tesla’s AI chip? Custom-built. The software? Built from scratch. No shortcuts, no borrowed brains.
The Apple of Elon’s Eye (Or Not)
Now, if you’re an office worker who clutches their iPhone like it’s oxygen, Musk’s threat sounds wild. But here’s the weird part—it might actually happen.
He’s framing this as a data security issue, not just beef. He says OpenAI could gain access to sensitive data if deeply integrated into iOS. And given Musk’s… let’s say cautious views on AI, he’s not about to let that fly in his companies.
